Home Preservation

What is Home Preservation?

Home Preservation is a program designed to assist low-income homeowners who face challenges maintaining their homes due to age, disability, and/or changing family circumstances. The program focuses on addressing essential home maintenance and minor repair needs that help homeowners remain safe, stable, and housed.

Projects through the Home Preservation and Repairs program may include:
  • Repairing or replacing windows and doors that are drafty or damaged
  • Addressing siding, paint, or exterior surface deterioration
  • Repairing or replacing decks, porches, steps, and railings
  • Installing accessibility modifications, such as ramps, to support aging in place
  • Performing demolition or removal of unsafe materials
  • Fixing water damage, basement moisture, or roof leaks
  • Repairing or servicing heating and electrical systems
  • Removing junk, debris, and brush
  • Other home improvements as needed to ensure safety, accessibility, and habitability

In recent years, the program has emphasized an “aging in place” approach, making small but meaningful changes that support homeowners whose mobility or accessibility needs evolve over time.

Habitat for Humanity coordinates skilled volunteers and incorporates homeowner “sweat equity” to complete these improvements. In addition, Habitat works closely with families to develop affordable financing plans and offers zero-interest loans, ensuring homeowners are not financially burdened by necessary home repairs.

Through the Home Preservation program, Habitat for Humanity extends its mission beyond new construction, helping more families maintain their homes, preserve housing stability, and remain in their communities.

VOLUNTEER

Apply for Home Preservation

The eligibility criteria for home preservation partner families requires that:
  1. Families own a home that is in need of minor repairs or renovations that the family is unable to afford or complete themselves.
  2. Families are willing to accept financial responsibility for the cost of repair materials. Habitat for Humanity works with families to come up with an affordable payment plan.
  3. Families are willing to partner with Habitat for Humanity by providing all required documents and completing sweat equity hours.

For more in-depth eligibility guidelines click here.

If you're interested in our home preservation program, fill out the form below and let us know what project(s) you need done and any questions you have. We'll help you figure out if you're eligible and help you through the application process.

If you choose to apply, you can download and fill out the application. You can also pick up an application in person at the Habitat office. Submitted applications can be mailed to our office or dropped off in person at the office or the ReStore during business hours.

If selected, you become a partner family with ICHFH, and agree to complete sweat equity (volunteer work with Habitat). We ask that all able-bodied residents work alongside volunteers. If physical labor is not possible, homeowners are able to serve as site host, work in the Habitat office or ReStore, help with fundraising, or give back to the community in other ways.
